SENte Centres: The course

Support inclusion

SENte Centres support inclusion by delivering the Using ICT to Support Learning: SEN course to their staff and staff at other schools in their area. Based around the InContexT: SEN training materials, this course:

  • offers manageable INSET for both qualified teachers and support staff
  • uses technology to enhance learning and raise achievement amongst pupils with SEN
  • guides and informs colleagues about the difficulties pupils may face, and the teaching solutions that can be used to overcome them
  • explores how available computers and peripherals can be modified to help SEN pupils, with the help of the AbilityNet materials.

Tutor material

The course comprises four sessions. Each SENte Centre tutor receives a pack of material to help them deliver the course. The programme will help staff to:

  • analyse how ICT could be used to benefit particular pupils
  • understand how ICT accessibility issues can be tackled in a school context
  • complete an ICT learning activity with one or more SEN pupils.

For more detail, view a demonstration of the tutor disc that accompanies the course (click on the ‘SEN’ tab).

Learner material

All participating learners receive a pack containing:

  • a reference guide to SEN and ICT
  • a multimedia guide to accessibility
  • learning and reference material to help combat gaps in ICT skills
  • over 140 ready-to-use learning activities for use with SEN pupils.

How your school can benefit

Running the Using ICT to Support Learning: SEN course helps schools demonstrate commitment to improving every child’s access to the curriculum and the overall quality of their experience in school. See the centre list to find a SENte Centre in your area, or browse the rest of this site for information about how your school could benefit by becoming a SENte Centre.
